In my youth, my relationship to religion switched from being
a devout evangelical fundamentalist Christian, the faith in which I was raised,
to a devout New Atheist. Eventually, I decided to study religion at the graduate level. Now my relationship to religion is clear. I am a religion critic.
Religious criticism means having profound respect for religion. It means that religion is worthy of attention and commentary. Hopefully you will join me in this conversation. But is such a conversation possible? After all, religion is often ignored in pleasant conversation. Why? Not out of respect. If religion was respected, we would be comfortable asking difficult questions. Only through asking difficult questions does understanding begin.
